The question nobody asks: insurance · 138 words · about 55 seconds
Here's the biggest thing homeowners don't know to ask about.
Most builders carry regular state workers' comp. State workers' comp does not cover an injury that happens over navigable water. And on a dock job, that's where the work happens.
The coverage that does is called USL&H. That stands for the U.S. Longshore and Harbor Workers' Act. We carry it, along with crew coverage, and it is not cheap. Our insurance bill runs into six figures a year.
Here's why that matters to you. If a worker gets hurt on your project and the contractor doesn't have the right coverage, guess who gets sued? The homeowner. You're the one with the waterfront property.
So whoever you talk to, ask them for a certificate of insurance that shows USL&H, sent straight from their insurance company. We'll send you ours.
